If You're Happy and you Know it ...

... Vote for me! (or rather this post)Alright so clearly I am showing my mommy tendencies with this post but there is a note of seriousness to it as well.  Yesterday it seemed like there was a lot of grumbling over the technology aspect of this class and not a lot of discussion of the "issues" surrounding the technologies possible implications for the classroom and beyond.  And even though it may seem there is a lot of frustration I think it is just a learning curve that we all need to get over and acclimatize to being in such a different class than many of us are used to.  If I'm wrong please let me know (be gentle with me) but I also seemed to hear a lot of positive comments about the class.  Unfortunately  these were side notes, and not voiced as loud as the complaints.   I, for one, am loving this class, its format and the demographics of the participants.  Too often we sit in the same rooms with the same people semester after semester.  It is so nice to meet new people and hear different perspectives.  So if you are a bit of a masochist, in pain but enjoying it none the less, please join me in voting for this post and letting our fearless leaders know that we are behind them, even though some of us are limping!

I think this experience also is a lesson in what it means to be a teacher or a technology designer in terms of the assumptions that are made on either side. As teachers we often assume that things we are doing with our kids are easy or transparent to them, when frequently they have no earthly idea what we are talking about. This is just as true with technology and supporting people in using new tools in their practice. To hijack Cole's quote about technology - "transparency is only transparency to people who can see what you are talking about". I am sure there is something here related to how design impacts your identity within a community, but I will let you work that out.

I am enjoying the challenge of working with a new set of students ... it is making me understand the University in new ways and at the end of the day is one of the biggest reasons I wanted to do this. Trust me, the grumbles are no louder in this class than in ANY IST course I have taught. Scott and I are pushing you in new ways -- and to tell you the truth we are pushing ourselves as well. Speaking only for myself, I am out of my comfort zone with the technology we've decided on as well. It all takes time and I do think the issues related to the core of the class will begin to take center stage.

With that said, I appreciate the admission that you are enjoying it ... I especially like that you haven't been scared off or are ready to run away. The fact that we have such an interesting and diverse group is a good thing. And, BTW Scott -- don't steal my quotes ;-)

This class is a lot of fun and very addicting. It is also great to see the diversity of people and experiences in class. I consistently check this site to see who commented and what my classmates are thinking about. As far as the learning curve, well we are in school, right? This is what we are here for... We also have this wonderful forum to extend class discussions when we get a little stuck with the technological aspect in class. Our fearless leaders are great. How often do you get to take a class with people who have the power to truly influence education? Masochists UNITE!!!

Thank you for this post. I, too, am really enjoying this class, and I appreciate the support from the other classmates. I was worried that I might be holding some of you back, and for that, I apologize. I appreciate your help and patience. I do look forward to coming to class, and yes, I must admit, I am getting more "addicted" to checking the web site!!! Oh, no!!! Their plan is working!!!!

My experience with this class has only been over the past 4 days, but already my brain is working overtime with the possibilities presented by the technologies we have discussed. I consider myself to be very tech-savvy, but it wasn't until this week that I really knew how digg, delicious (check out the Lee LeFever video explaining social bookmarking), or tagging worked, but now that I do, look out! I look forward to growing with this class and exploring the technology in new academic ways. Sure it may be painful to wrap our brains around something, but they are just growing pains. I think the results of our multi-disciplinary collaboration will be utterly amazing, and I look forward to this process. Keep fighting the good fight, and disrupt the status quo!

Only shooting stars break the mold (yes, I just quoted Smashmouth!).

Hey I enjoy the class more than any other, I try to take most technology class and even teach one but still can't get more of it. Of course there are many different aspects and even downfalls of using just technology in classrooms, but however it seems as trend and something interesting and also very fun to learn however it's good not get carried away with this.

i haven't been really talking good today, so just get the point and love technology.
