Pea (1993) "Practices of distributed intelligence and designs for education"

This is the first week on the cycle where you will look at design. We are taking a somewhat different approach to design as a theme. It will not be about user interface (directly) and it won't be about coding and tools (precisely), but it will be about how we as social beings interact through the artifacts that we design. It will be a theme that is integral to the structure and function of the course and the other themes. Try to think about design as a natural part of any socially mediated interaction. Pea's piece will lay some of the groundwork for this perspective and give you a chance to begin thinking about design in a new way.
