An interesting view of teaching with iPads ... disruptive or not?
I had high hopes when I handed out iPads to students in my graduate seminar this semester. I wanted to explore the possibilities of tablet computing and see firsthand how tablets might be used in higher education. I also wanted students to see for themselves where the iPad might fit into their lives and their careers - and into the future of media and communication.
Good, thought-provoker. The two strongest parts to this piece are where he describes how he matched the iPad to specific purposes in his own life and that teachers should have a specific purpose in mind in using it (not just because it's a shiny new thing that's all the rage with tech bloggers).
Yep, indeed, all good questions. Although I realize he's limited by space and time, i think it would have been great if he would have added an example of his own effort to use the iPad purposefully. Even if it wasn't successful, (and perhaps even more so if it wasn't), I think readers of this piece would have appreciated this kind of experience-sharing. I think a lot of people like to hear stories of what was tried ... i think it might make those who are reluctant (e.g., Rogers' diffusion) a little more willing to experiment b/c they've got models to look to.
