The single-tasking of the ipad 2 accessories keeps me focused on one task (grading) at a time (especially if my laptop isn't there, which it's usually not when I grade on the iPad)?

- Pricilla Hoeffliger

There is probably a PDA link at the bottom of your ANGEL site that would allow you to switch over and view it in a different mode.

You might also try the web browser app Atomic Web, which you can configure to act like certain browsers and acts a lot more friendly toward ANGEL. Best of luck!

- Michael J. Faris

Hey guys,
I use angel for Canisius college and when I try to log on from my iPad however when I get to the log in page it says angel is not supported with this browser (safari). How are you guys getting on. Are you using a different browser. I have tried both PDF and normal versions and neither works. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

I have found the iPad to be a great device, but not for reading books. It's heavy, the LCD screen is not readable outside and it's very straining for my eyes.

For browsing and online reference I think it's great though (and also for my kids playing games).

- Ereader

Thanks! It's cool to use for sure. I'm wondering where my 'dropoff' in enthusiasm will be. It will be very interesting to follow all this and see if the same happens w/ students. I suspect they will carry it longer because many of them already live w/ devices with the mobile functionality that the iPad seems to extend.

- MATTHEW N MEYER

More than one has set up email. I know at least three had after less than 48 hours with the iPad (one less than an hour and a half after they got it). I don't really know how else they're using it yet — I know one student already has Netflix downloaded. There's definitely a wide variety of familiarity and comfort with the device — from having it set up within minutes to struggling to even get it to sync with iTunes correctly (which is largely a problem with the computers and not their iPad use specifically). We'll see what else they do as the course goes on!

- Michael J. Faris

Matthew, I think you're right that part of this is the "hipness" of an iPad. There would probably be less enthusiasm if it were a device that carried less hype in the media—though I imagine there would still be lots of interest and intrique.

I see some mighty big smiles on these students' (and faculty, staff) faces. Are the students just excited because it's the iPad? Would they be less enthused if it were the latest greatest pen tablet from another manufacturer? It seems to me that the iPad gets a lot of 'wiggle' room from people because they're just so excited to have an iPad.

FYI- I finally got an iPad to use this week!

- MATTHEW N MEYER

I've requested Bento in a recent iPad order because of it's flexibility.

I've been a fan of FileMaker as a simple database/reference/application platform (even did a randomized quiz once in FileMaker). It's main problem has been the inability to port it to a more universal problem.

- ELIZABETH J PYATT

Thanks for the comments!

Allan, I believe I was using the PDA mode when testing ANGEL on the iPad. You're right that it works more smoothly than the "normal" mode. Some of the problems with the ANGEL mail client are, I think, browser-specific, rather than iPad-specific. I've had similar trouble using ANGEL mail in Safari on my MacBook (although the discussion forums work there, so perhaps the trouble I had with that feature was related to the iPad).

Jeff, thanks for the link! I look forward to checking that out.

- Patricia Gael

Thanks for the review of using ANGEL with the iPad. I was at Blackboard's annual user conference last week, they own ANGEL, and they hinted that a mobile app for ANGEL was coming soon. A big piece of that will be the ability to generate content as well as consume it. Here is a link to a demo of the mobile app for Blackboard. I suspect the one app for ANGEL will be similar.

Hi Patricia. Have you tried the "PDA" view of ANGEL? When you go to the ANGEL Login screen, it's displayed in the lower left. It's not pretty, but it may be a way to get around some of those mail and discussion forum barriers that you encountered. I don't think it will fix any of the content-creation or file upload/download issues though.

- ALLAN SHAWN GYORKE

There are also a number of stripped-down writing apps that allow users to configure synchronization. I've heard that My Writing Nook (http://www.mywritingnook.com/) works well for syncing documents from, say, an iPad to a desktop. Office2 HD (http://www.bytesquared.com/products/office/ipad/default.asp) seems to be another favorite--it can connect with Google Doc accounts.

Developers seem to be aware that versioning is a big concern on the iPad; I would guess that in the next few months even there will be some other good solutions for us to consider.

- Patricia Gael

I think one of the things we really need to think about and investigate are the features of ANGEL that do work with the iPad. In my limited testing, very little works the way it should. If this is the case, we will need alternative ways for students to turn in assignments.

- Cole W.

Have you looked at DropBox as a Mobile Me alternative. At the lowest level, there is a free version that gives you a gig or two. They have an app for the iPhone and it also works perfectly with GoodReader. In all of these scenarios, I am not sure it solves the versioning issue -- to edit something in Pages you still need to physically move it onto the iPad and then email a version back to yourself. It isn't an actual sync from what I can tell.

- Cole W.
