Interesting presenter and information. I'd think she'd be a good speaker to bring to UP if we ever start another speaker series. symposium speaker series? Then record and play them on monitors in halls and break areas at the Penn Stater.... Anyway, I think Alison Head's information here was fairly important.

- DAVID R STONG

Good article. I discussed similar layout after Jerry asked if we shouldn't be doing this with all our sites, in reference to http://www.informationarchitects.jp/en/business-class-news/ Oliver Reichenstein's "Business Class:Freemium for News?" Jerry's comment was, "It is so easy to do if there is a bit of modesty and no trying to sell things." I'd have to agree.

- DAVID R STONG

That's what inspired me to write this post, Cole. I think it's just part of openness -- to allow/tolerate voices that we don't like, at least for a period of time. Mr. iPad Keyboard above left a message, showing he actually read the article. It's a perfect example. How can we determine whether this is more about his agreeing my points or about his link to the site selling iPad Keyboard (link removed)?

- TK Lee

From what I've read, if you delete the tweet or delete your account the tweets go away -- even from the LoC.

This move will be huge for research. Up until this point I was working back room deals to get at the tweets from ci597 two years ago. Now we can do what we need to do without pulling teeth. It is a very interesting and welcomed move!

- Cole

I have bought an iPad for myself, but honestly I feel it is not a must for students in North America. Students in most North American universities already have access to computers, Internet ... the gadget just offers a fancy interface, convenience of being able to carry it with you .. but these are luxuries. Students should focus more on learning than just getting swayed by these fancy features which come at a high cost.

- Gregg

Actually, I think that Facebook may have been trying to do a pretty cool thing with community pages. If I’m understanding correctly its design is to carry popular opinion and escalate it. ‘Betty White should host SNL’ ; suddenly grabs a million collected voices and with the help of Facebook can be escalated into a higher level of activism. Community groups could be a means for Facebook to create lobbying power. ‘Legalize Marijuana’; with millions of virtual signatures can become an activist group. The community pages are a play to turn FB users into militant rebels.

- iPad Dock

Two interesting things about this announcement. First, Cole had lamented the loss of his class's use of twitter when he taught Disruptive Technologies two years ago. Hopefully, he'll be able to dig back into that if he wants to.

Second, in today's Collegian, there is an article about the UPUA Student Life and Diversity Chairman who resigned because of racist and homophobic comments that he made on Twitter. He deleted his Twitter account, but the Library of Congress will have a record of his Tweets for the rest of his life.

http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2010/04/15/upua_student_life_and_diversit.aspx

I feel sympathy for the guy. College students sometimes say really stupid things, learn from them, and become better people. But that may not have happened if he had just made the comments in private.

- ALLAN SHAWN GYORKE

Unfortunately, self moderation doesn't work for the typical, small, personal blog. something like akismet where it is a central services that learns as everyone is submitting data to it.

SixApart has a similar product called typepad anti-spam. This is something we need to test with blogs@psu.

- Brad Kozlek

The question I have been asking myself a lot lately is how do they build these amazing data visualizations? I really want an easy way to build beautiful visualizations of data without the overhead of serious programming. I want one button data visualization. I know daytum is close, but I want something more powerful.

Robin, it is a very interesting approach. I love it. It very easily could have been a disaster. But it is written and performed well, never taking itself too seriously while getting across all the serious information that prospective students and their families hear over and over again, from campus to campus. It's effective because it connects with our right brains. And because of that, we're a participant in it throughout the entire piece.

Yes, musicals are in. So, Yale students and alumni must have taken note of that and applied the best elements to their charming video. Thanks for sharing it. I'm late in seeing it, but very glad I did.
